Detoxification and Substance Abuse Treatment
3 clock hours NAADAC. ADACB-Ga
“Prior to the 1970s, public intoxication was commonly treated as a criminal offense. People arrested for it were held in “drunk tanks” where they often underwent withdrawal without medical intervention. As society moved toward a more humanitarian view of people with substance use disorders, several methods of detoxification have evolved.”
“The “medical model” of detoxification is characterized by the use of physicians and nursing staff and the administration of medication to assist people through withdrawal safely. The “social model” relies more on a supportive non-hospital environment than on medication to ease the passage through withdrawal.” SAMHSA, 2006

Read MoreI took this course a few months ago and thought it would be an “easier” course for me due to my nursing background. I found it challenging and rewarding to learn about new techniques and drugs used (and some that are still used) for detoxification. I also appreciated the insight into treatment decisions made based on the withdrawal status of the client.
