Course Description

“Relapse is more than just using alcohol or drugs. It is the progressive process of becoming so dysfunctional in recovery that self-medication with alcohol or drugs seems like a reasonable choice.” “The relapse process is a lot like knocking over a line of dominos. The first domino hits the second, which hits the third, and soon a progressive chain reaction has started.” Terence T. Gorski on Relapse

An alcohol or drug relapse is the recurrence of symptoms of the disease after a period of short- or long-term recovery. Like any chronic disease, drug & alcohol addiction are subject to periods of remission and relapse. During the recovery process, individuals may be exposed to certain triggers and other risk factors that increase the risk of returning to active addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. While relapses can happen and are common, they are not inevitable. Following drug relapse, taking action early and employing relapse prevention steps can reduce the likelihood of another relapse and minimize the intensity of a relapse.

RADAR is an excellent tool to teach my clients, as most addicts have a short attention span and their minds are racing in every direction. I have an idea to write RADAR on post it notes and place in various areas the client visits frequently. such as the bathroom mirror or the refrigerator.

I just finished these course "Relapse Prevention" with Acts School of Addiction, and I am grateful because this course provides principals and skills in order to work with our clients as Addiction Counselors. I am able to apply this knowledge presently with my clients. As I read the information and answered my homework questions so much of what is in this course I am applying on a daily basis with my clients. This course is practical and so on point with what we should be working with our clients with daily. I would recommend this course to all social service workers to acquire the knowledge to assist with our client's journeys to living healthy, abstinent lives.
