Course Description

Domestic violence is the use of intentional emo­tional, psychological, sexual, or physical force by one family member or intimate partner to control another. Researchers have found that one fourth to one half of men who commit acts of domestic violence have substance abuse problems. While domestic violence affects a variety of populations, this Quick Guide only discusses the treatment of adult male batterers and adult female survivors. (SAMHSA Quick Guide, SMA 15-3583).


Objectives. Participants will

  • Define and examine the relationship between Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse
  • Review perpetrator power and control dynamic
  • Consider the Impact of COVID pandemic guidelines on victim safety
  • Review best practices for integrated substance abuse programs addressing domestic violence


Course Modality

This is an independent home-study course. Students will take the course according to their own timeline. 


CE’s awarded: 6 contact hours. To receive the course completion certificate, each student is required to agree to Student Learning Contract, read all text-based materials, view any media posted, complete and pass course examination, and complete and submit course evaluation.

Diane Sherman, PhD and Charles Sperling, MA

Diane and Charles have known one another since 1995. They are both Certified Addiction Counselors, having served this population in substance use disorder treatment for their entire career. Charles is the Executive Director and Founder of STAND, Inc, Decatur, Ga., established in 1999. Charles is an expert in the issues that intersect with substance use disorders, including homelessness, prison recidivism, domestic violence, mental health and their negative impact in communities.
