Addressing Specific Needs of Women in Substance Use DisorderTreatment
6 clock hours GACA. NAADAC. ADACB-Ga
What makes gender an important clinical issue in substance abuse treatment? Are there gender differences in the development and pattern of substance use disorders? Do these differences warrant specific treatment approaches? To date, there is considerable evidence denoting that gender differences do exist, and these differences begin with early risk factors for substance use and extend throughout the course of treatment and recovery. Grounded in research, TIP 51 begins with unique biopsychosocial and developmental issues of women that create or intensify gender differences across the continuum of care. Knowledge of these unique factors is essential for treatment providers to fully understand the contexts of women’s lives and their needs. (SAMHSA, TIP 51, 2009).

Read MoreIn one way, I'd like to say this course has made it easier to understand women in substance abuse disorder, but in another way its even more complex because there is so much more to consider when trying to meet a womans needs. Culture has come to accept mens behavior as normal in SUD whereas women are victims of social stigma. The unbelievable amount of pressure and responsibility placed on a woman is overwhelming, especially when she has dependent children to consider. It seems in some cultures, it brings shame on the house of the man if the woman seeks help from an outside source for SUD. All kinds of things need to be considered when screening any woman for the specialized treatment she may need for her SUD, her health issues and care and assistance she may need for her dependent children. A case by case approach where each is treated as an individual, not just a client.
